Hong Kong played an important role in history of modern China. The Father of Modern China, Dr Sun Yat Sen who overthrown the Qing emperors and ended the imperial rule of over 2,000 years, was educated in Hong Kong, and planned his revolutionary activities in Hong Kong.

While the British were busy building up the Victoria City, the Chinese community becomes the ‘China Town’. The building up of the Victoria City requires labour, and attracted poor Chinese from the mainland to come to make a living.

Hong Kong was called by Queen Victoria “a barren rock with nothing on it” when she was first colonised by the British. The British, European traders and merchants then worked hard to build up this Victoria City in the Far East, and eventually, she developed into a world metropolis today.
